Counting Statistics dead_time_calc
Detector Dead-Time & Pulse Pileup Loss Correction
Quantifies detector recovery time pulse pileup counting losses and reconstructs true incident interaction rates using both non-paralyzable and paralyzable saturation models.
Non-Paralyzable: n = m / (1 − m τ); Paralyzable: m = n e^(−n τ)

Governing Equation & Parameters
True Count Rate = Measured Rate / (1 − Measured Rate × Dead Time); Loss Fraction = m × τ
| Symbol | Parameter | Default Unit | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| m | Observed Count Rate | cps | Recorded / measured detector counting rate in counts per second. |
| n | True Interaction Rate | cps | Actual incident interaction rate entering the detector in counts per second. |
| τ | Detector Dead Time | us | Detector resolving / dead time in microseconds (µs). |
| f_loss | Counting Loss Fraction | % | Percentage of incident events lost due to detector dead time. |

Operational Guidance & Physics Assumptions
- Non-paralyzable detectors (typical gas GM counters) remain dead for a fixed period τ after an event; events occurring during dead time are simply lost without extending the dead period.
- Paralyzable detectors (scintillators, electron multipliers) re-trigger dead time on every interaction, leading to complete output paralysis at extremely high flux.
- A counting loss fraction exceeding 20% (m * τ > 0.20) signals severe detector saturation requiring geometric standoff or collimation.
